The prophet Jonah ran away from obeying God; when he obeyed God, he did so with a grudge. It was only after being thrown overboard a ship, being swallowed by a great fish, and being spit up on dry ground that Jonah called Ninevah to repent. Jonah’s reason for initial disobedience was that he wanted God to destroy the Ninevites and he knew that God was gracious and compassionate and abounding in love. He knew if the Ninevites repented, God would not destroy them. Jonah’s heart was wrong; his theology was right! Sometimes our theology is right, but our hearts….
